INTRO: Over the last several weeks we have been TAKING A CLOSE LOOK AT THE MESSIAH as a part of our Christmas series of messages. As you will recall we have examined THE NEED OF THE MESSIAH, THE PROPHECIES OF THE MESSIAH AND THE BIRTH OF THE MESSIAH. Today we shall conclude the series by examining THE RESPONSE TO THE MESSIAH. The question we all should consider is: IN LIGHT OF WHO THE MESSIAH IS, ARE WE RESPONDING TO HIM PROPERLY IN OUR PERSONAL LIVES? In this message we will observe how the SHEPHERDS and the MAGI responded to the birth of the Messiah and take some lessons from them on how we should respond to Him today in our lives.

INTRO: This evening during the service we have had many passages of scripture read to us concerning the INCARNATION OF JESUS CHRIST! We have also heard special music and have sung congregationally great CHRISTMAS HYMNS AND CAROLS that relate to the INCARNATION OF JESUS CHRIST. What a blessing it has been to focus on the INCARNATION OF OUR WONDERFUL LORD. BUT HOW DOES ALL OF THAT RELATE TO US TONIGHT...RIGHT NOW? IS WHAT WE HAVE READ AND HAVE SUNG JUST AN ANCIENT STORY OR DOES IT HAVE REAL MEANING TO US ON DECEMBER 24, 2016? Well, it does have GREAT MEANING TO ALL OF US and that GREAT MEANING is all bundled up in THE GIFT OF GOD TO ALL MANKIND. LETS' TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!

INTRO: So far in our study on A CLOSER LOOK AT THE MESSIAH, we have observed THE NEED FOR THE MESSIAH and THE PROPHECIES ABOUT THE MESSIAH. In those two studies we reviewed that the sinful condition of mankind required the Messiah for mankind’s redemption and the fulfilled prophecies of the Messiah prove that Jesus Christ is all that He and scripture says He is. Today we shall focus directly on the BIRTH OF THE MESSIAH and in doing so will see the necessity of the VIRGIN BIRTH OF CHRIST and what His INCARNATION teaches us about God and His WORLD-WIDE REDEMPTION PLAN.

TEAM WORK SURROUNDING CHRIST'S BIRTH

INTRO: We are all familiar with the effectiveness of a "TEAM EFFORT." Whether it be in sports, at work, in the family, in church, or in government, TEAM WORK IS ESSENTIAL. Putting it simply: GOOD TEAMWORK BRINGS VICTORY BUT BAD TEAMWORK BRINGS DEFEAT. Upon looking at the birth of Jesus Christ there are a lot of things we see: Angels, shepherds, wise men, Mary, Joseph, etc. BUT WHAT WE MAY FAIL TO REALIZE IS THE TEAM WORK THAT BROUGHT THE MESSAGE OF THE BIRTH OF CHRIST TO US. INTRO: The messages of Christmas, Christ and Communion could perhaps be many depending upon how one approaches the study of the scriptures. But one GREAT LESSON that is seen in the three is that of UNITY WITH OTHERS OF LIKE PRECIOUS FAITH! Disunity among believers is sinful and leads to more sinful practices including DISHONORING GOD and Unity among believers is righteous and leads to more righteous practices. THE CHOICE BETWEEN DISUNITY AND UNITY IS OUR PERSONAL CHOICE. WHAT CHOICE WILL YOU MAKE?

INTRO: We live in a time when many people think that culture and the combined intelligence of society is so great that mankind can solve any problem that comes along. It is true that God has given to humanity a lot of intelligence that is seen in technology, medicine, science, etc., but the point to be recognized is that there is one thing that humanity CANNOT DO IN ANY POSSIBLE WAY, AND THAT IS TO PROVIDE SALVATION FROM SIN. It took a Messiah to do that and in Jesus Christ the whole world has a Messiah through which to find salvation. I am sure most of us know that, but let’s take a CLOSER LOOK AT WHY A MESSIAH IS NEEDED AND WHY ONLY JESUS CHRIST IS THE NEEDED MESSIAH.

 PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS BIBLICALLY

INTRO: Every one of us in this building knows what Christmas is all about. CHRISTMAS IS THE TIME WHEN CHRISTIANS ALL AROUND THE WORLD CELEBRATE THE INCARNATION OF GOD IN THE PERSON OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. Most Christians celebrate Christmas on December 25th although we really do NOT know the actual date of the birth of Christ. However, over the years I have known of Christians who avoided celebrating Christmas because in their minds doing so takes away from the reality of Who Christ is. BUT CHRISTMAS SHOULD BE CELEBRATED…AS LONG AS THE PROPER PREPARATIONS, BIBLICAL PREPARATIONS, ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. So HOW CAN WE PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS BIBLICALLY? Consider some suggestions.

“UNITY: A MANDATE FROM GOD”

INTRO: One of the things that brings instability and the lack of peace to a person, a church, a community or a nation is DISUNITY! In addition, one of the things Satan uses to disrupt lives of people on every level and in every institution is DISUNITY! We have just gone through a major national Presidential election and in some sense there appears to be DISUNITY that if not resolved will weaken America within and in our relationship with other nations of the world. UNITY IS A MANDATE FROM GOD! IT IS NOT AN OPTION BUT IT IS WHAT HE EXPECTS, PARTICULARLY FROM HIS PEOPLE. So let’s consider the concept of Biblical Unity and what it takes to achieve it in every level of life.

“NO CONDEMNATION IN CHRIST”
JOHN 3:16-21

INTRO: On several occasions throughout my ministry, I have sat with someone who, because of a committed crime, was sentenced to a jail term. In my opinion this is one of the MOST SOLEMN EVENTS to experience. And yet, for the most part, these sentences relate to this life and generally just a portion of time in this life unless it is a “LIFE SENTENCE” and often even that is reduced in a certain number of years. BUT ALL OF HUMANITY IS UNDER THE SENTENCE OF CONDEMNATION TO ETERNAL SEPARATION IN THE LAKE OF FIRE DUE TO PERSONAL SIN THAT IS MUCH MORE SOLEMN AND SERIOUS THAN ANY SENTENCE A HUMAN COURT OR JUDGE CAN EVER GIVE. This is a sentence that NO ONE WILL ESCAPE apart from trusting Christ as personal Savior. Let's talk about this SENTENCE OF CONDEMNATION that every one born on earth is under and cannot escape apart from receiving Christ as personal Savior.

“REVIVE US AGAIN – TODAY”
HABAKKUK 3:1,2

INTRO: REVIVAL! WHAT IS IT? DO YOU WANT IT? WHAT DOES IT DO? WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE IT? These are very practical questions for us all to consider in the time in which we live. The Bible is filled with teaching about REVIVAL in both the Old and the New Testaments and yet it is rare to SEE A TRUE REVIVAL. So, let's consider this great subject and see what the Lord has us to learn.

“A MANDATE FROM GOD”
JOSHUA 1:1-9

INTRO: As Christians we have the strength, the power, the wisdom, the insight and the ability to do all God wants us to do. And yet many times we falter, fail and fall in doing the will of God, whether it is in our ministry or our personal lives. WHY IS THIS THE CASE? Well, it certainly is not God's fault, is it? NO! THEN IT MUST BE A WEAKNESS IN OUR LIVES. Would you agree? In the text before us, God was giving Joshua the great task of LEADING ISRAEL INTO THE PROMISED LAND. This task was NOT going to be without trial or trouble. God knew that and Joshua knew that! Therefore GOD GAVE JOSHUA A MANDATE TO FOLLOW THAT WOULD ENABLE HIM TO FULFILL WHAT SEEMED TO BE AN INSURMOUNTABLE TASK TO JOSHUA. That mandate given to Joshua by God is the same mandate you and I have before us as we go throughout life. WHAT IS THAT MANDATE? OBSERVE VERSE 9.

Looking down through the history of the Church, we find that SOME Christians have served God in an honorable way, SOME Christians have been mediocre in their service and SOME Christians have hardly every served the Lord. INTO WHICH CATEGORY DO YOU FIND YOURSELF? God wants EVERY CHRISTIAN to serve Him and every obedient Christian will serve God but WHAT ARE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS FOR SPIRITUAL SERVICE? “WHY WAS AMERICA ATTACKED ON 9/11/01?”
ISAIAH 1:1-20

INTRO: What a beautiful morning September 11, 2001 was up until shortly after 8:30 AM. But how quickly that beautiful day changed as we began to hear of the planes crashing into the World Trade Center in NYC, the Pentagon in DC and Shanksville, right in our own backyard. DO YOU REMEMBER THE DAY? I AM SURE MANY OF US WHO ARE OLD ENOUGH CAN…(Remember some of the events that day and that week). After the smoke cleared from the plane crashes people began to ask some serious questions:
1) Who was behind this terrible attack on our native soil?
2) Why did the attackers desire such destruction on America?
3) Was God attempting to get our attention?
4) Would America now repent of how God had been erased from our culture?
5) What lessons did we need to learn?
Many tried to answer those questions and some thought that this was the time when REVIVAL WOULD COME TO AMERICA! BUT IT DID NOT! NOW THAT 9/11/01 IS FIFTEEN YEARS BEHIND US, LET'S REFLECT A BIT AND ONCE AGAIN ASK THE QUESTION: WHY WAS AMERICA ATTACKED ON THAT DREADFUL DAY?

"CHRISTIAN SERVICE REMEMBERED AND HONORED"
HEBREWS 6:9-12

INTRO: Many times over the years I have heard people say, "I AM SO DISCOURAGED BECAUSE I NEVER HAVE ANYONE THANK ME FOR WHAT I DO AROUND THE CHURCH AND WHAT IS WORSE, I DO NOT THINK MY MINISTRY IS EFFECTIVE." Have you ever said that? If you have, you are numbered among the MANY WHO HAVE! Please allow me to give some food for thought about that statement:
1) Discouragement is a TOOL of Satan.
2) Not being thanked DOES NOT indicate not being appreciated.
3) Our service SHOULD NOT BE DONE just to get human applause.
4) The most effective Christian Service is done BEHIND THE SCENES.
5) The effect of your ministry is NOT BEST JUDGED by human evaluation.
6) Every element of Christian Ministry that is done to honor God will be HONORED BY GOD.
CHRISTIAN SERVICE THAT IS CONDUCTED WITH THE RIGHT MOTIVE AND BY THE STRENGTH GOD PROVIDES WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AND HONORED BY GOD EVEN IF NO ONE EVER EXPRESSES APPRECIATION FOR OUR SERVICE HERE ON EARTH.

"SET YOURSELVES, STAND YE STILL, AND SEE THE SALVATION OF THE LORD"

INTRO: Life is filled with all sorts of troubles, battles, and strifes which often will bring us to the point of FEAR and CONCERN about WHAT TO DO and HOW TO OVERCOME those terrible circumstances we face. Often because we are human we attempt to face and overcome those issues from the human perspective, ONLY TO FACE DEFEAT AND DISMAY! But as Christians, we NEED NOT DEPEND UPON HUMAN STRENGTH ALONE to face the bad circumstances of life. In fact, we need not to depend upon human strength AT ALL but rather turn things over the Lord and allow Him to handle the matters in His time, His way and for His glory. In other words, as we face the overwhelming battles of life we need to learn to LET GOD HANDLE THEM, FOR THE BATTLE IS THE LORD'S. This is the lesson of our text today, so let's study and allow God to speak to us.

“LESSONS FROM THE CALL OF JEREMIAH”
JEREMIAH 1:1-10

INTRO: Twice in the New Testament we are told the that Old Testament has been written for us and is a learning tool for us.
-Romans 15:4
-1 Corinthians 10:11
THEREFORE, WE WOULD DO WELL TO STUDY THE OLD TESTAMENT ON A REGULAR BASIS. (All scripture is fully inspired!).
In our text we find THE CALL OF JEREMIAH TO MINISTRY and this conversation between God and Jeremiah has a lot for us to learn in our own life and ministry. Let’s observe.

“THE DIVINE MAGNITUDE OF GOD'S GRACE”
EPHESIANS 1:3-7; 2:1-10

INTRO: The MORE we study the GRACE OF GOD, the MORE we realize that we need to study the GRACE OF GOD MORE! That is quite a loaded statement but it is TRUE because of the MAGNITUDE of God's Grace which will take us an ETERNITY to learn. GOD'S GRACE TOUCHES EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIFE! Therefore its MAGNITUDE is far beyond our ability to comprehend. But we need to understand that without the Grace of God WE WOULD HAVE NOTHING, WE WOULD BE NOTHING AND WE WOULD KNOW NOTHING OF THE GREATNESS OF GOD!
